This is aimed at people who go camping/rent a chalet and not those who regularley frequent hotels. I'm fed up in Blighty and wonder who would be prepared to pack the wife and kids in to the car and drive the best part of 1000km for a holiday in the french mountains(Can you guess what the plan is?)

What time of year? It's probably a bit cold at the moment. But yes, I have done quite a few times.

We did that as a family when I was a kid. It pissed down mercilessly, as it often does in the Pyrenees. We never did it again.

Summer and Winter,I've looked into "Log cabins" instead of chalet/caravans and they are much better for the winter(the place I'm looking at is 11 km from a ski resort)

Yes.

In fact, I was considering just about this plan this morning. Packing the car with tents and a LOAD of sleeping bags, and seeing how far across Europe you can drive now. Aiming for the Russian border.

Snag is that work is VERY busy at the mo and the missis would never, ever agree! (And we are going on holiday in two weeks time to Turkey, and the car needs some new tyres.)

I wouldn't camp in winter simply because, while it'll probably be fine, if it isn't it'll be properly miserable (IYSWIM). You can reasonable expect snow between now and May which, while it won't be enough to ski on will be enough to be entertaining or inconvenient (depending on your outlookbiggrin). We've done hut to hut walks in April when an ice axe would have been reassuring.

It depends on what your wife and kids are like. If they enjoy that kind of thing it'll be great, if they don't they'll really hate it, and you.

Yeah It is quite nice, just please for your own sanity avoid Lourdes. It is like blackpool of bible bashers.

I quite like Bareges as a town, and work around there.
