Strange Red Grunge

Checking oil, water etc today I found some strange red gunge all around the rad cap on the swirl pot, see pic



there ia also some gunge in the expansion tank.

Any ideas anyone

I would be looking at the headgasket. I know the deposit is usually white but what with rust discolouration etc it may be brown/red.

Looks more like radweld to me, have you put any into your system lately Norman ?

What anti freeze have you got in there - there is a red ready mixed option now for more modern stuff.

I was going to say rad weld to. I put some in an old tractor once and it looked just like that.

Its due for a service and bits soon I'll get the system flushed and refilled

It can be a bloody nightmare to flush out, that stuff.

I have to admit that I don't know what "cooked" radweld looks like - I've never used it after hearing stories of how indiscriminate it can be in terms of what it seals up - sometimes critical waterways or bypasses, or the thermostat etc. I'd rather fix what's wrong than use the stuff.

Actually now you mention it I had something similar in an old Citroen and I had put radweld in that. Hmmmmm.
