Decided to go to the Trafford centre yesterday at 3pm after not finding what I wanted in Preston. At 6.30 I finally got inside the Trafford centre after spending several hours not moving in my car stuck in traffic jams in and around the centre.

The place was manic, I have never seen so many cars/people there in my life. I was speaking to one chap who had been trying to leave since 1pm but was unable get out of his space.

Several shop assistants said they had not seen it so busy in years!!!

BUT I THOUGHT EVERYONE WAS SUPPOSE TO BE SKINT???

We had this three weeks ago in the Trafford Centre as well.

Couldn't understand it.

Were they actually spending though? SWMBO was at the new thing in Bristol yesterday, and she said that whilst it was busy, not many people to be seen buying/carrying shopping bags. AND! She didn't even buy anything - the shock nearly killed me......... eek

Probably a case of people not being able to afford a new car or move house, so they go and buy something else of less value to make up for it.

It was quite busy generally yesterday I found - first of the christmas offers seemed to be out. Unfortunately I now need to go shopping myself for a new shirt, but hopefully the sort of shops I'm going to don't have a christmas rush.

Having said that - were the towns still busy at night?

Not many people about on Friday night in town.

I suspect it mostly 'interest free credit' - merely loading up with things they don't really need to make themselves feel better.

You feel a bit miserable because taxes are high, Brown's an idiot and the weather is crap. So you buy some stuff to make you happier. It works for a few hours. Then youremeber that taxes are still high, Brown's still an idiot and the weather still is crap. So you buy some more stuff. After a few cycles of this, taxes are still high, Brown's still an idiot, the weather still is crap and now you've got a credit card bill you can't pay...

Ha, try the Little Thief on the A12. Only three customers dining and they still forgot my bloody dessert!

I have the same amount of money to spend on whatever I want just like I did at the beginning of the year, there will be many that are in the same boat.

i do too, but what i'm looking at is as people start to spend less it hits right the way across the business econemy - even if you dont work in retail it will hit right the way across - ie nobodys buying new cars or houses so sales workers are laid off, so are car builders and house builders. These people dont have money to spend on other items such as tv's fashion etc. This then hits as people in these stores are laid off. take this right the way through and people are defaulting on their mortgages, rents etc, there are more people claiming benefits etc so there is more pressure on public spending. Projects are put on hold and the types of industries that supply products and projects are hit, causing layoffs or businesses to go bust.

So i'm sat here working in IT seeing our customers put projects on hold which in turn causes less income into our company

this leads me to spend less, although i have the same amount coming in, i'm putting away for a rainy day - i'm not changing my car (was going to) i've not bought a new TV (was going to) or a new computer, i'm spending less on dvd's, takeaway etc which all hits other businesses because i'm not the only one doing this.

the reason i'm doing this is not because i'm struggling now, but i'm thinking come January should i be out of work and not find another job i'm not just going to struggle with the 'nice things' but i'm also going to struggle with rent and food bills.

it's a vicious circle!

Early Xmas shopping? Maybe people are getting earlier every year just in case they miss out on stuff.
