Hi,

I thought taking voluntary redundancy earlier this year was a great idea as the package on offer was good and I'd been there over 10 years and was feeling stagnant.

Over 3 months down the line I'm thinking maybe it wasn't the greatest move as the IT job market has turned to ste, especially up here in Manchester and I don't really want to relocate if it can be avoided. I've applied for lots of jobs (if they exist) and get lots of calls from recruitment agents but not had many interviews.

I had a call this morning to tell me the company with the really well paid job I had a second interview for the other week is now cutting jobs so they won't be taking anyone else on.

I've applied for a local IT job that will be paying almost £14k less than my previous package, and whilst it will cover all my living expenses comfortably, I'm not sure it is a good career move. It should be a secure job.

I have got savings from my house sale I can use to live, but they won't last for ever, and I'd rather not spend them.

Anyone else experienced this or in the same boat?

Cheers.

A lower paid job is still way better than no job.

Swallow your pride, answer the phone and make the tea for a while. You can carry on looking for something better.

I had a similar problem about 7 years ago when IT was in a bit of a downturn. I decided to start applying for the lower paid jobs but got no interest from them as they thought I wouldn't stay for very long (which was true).

A friend of mine was recently made redundant from an IT job and he's decided to retrain as a gas fitter. Whilst he's waiting that to kick off he applied for a job at B&Q and was turned down!

So what I'm saying is, you should apply for the lower paid jobs but they might not be keen on hiring someone who is taking a step down as they'll assume you'll be off again once the market has picked up.

I know you said that you did not want to relocate, but seriously think about it.

The UK and the European economy is not good at the moment, look outside of that.

I have lived in Egypt for the last 16 months, the economy is growing at 7 - 10% per year. The whole MENA region requires skilled personnel to continue the growth. There are a number of multinational companies here taking advantage of the labour situation and general low costs.

There is a price to pay, which is moving away from home. That is offset by generous tax free wages and a very good lifestyle. There are large expat communities, so it will be exactly like living in Manchester, but with sun.

It's easier to get a job from a job - go for it.
