They used to work on an X/Y servo system from what I rememeber. Also I used to have a real slinky but found it failed half way down the stairs every time.

Can see it pull the strings through a box on the left side of the board, then the strings go around and pull on the peices from various angles I think I can see.

That is an awesome video. Top marks to the guys who made it!
