Now that I'm on broadband, the computer will now pretty much be on-line when it's switched on, I have been known to leave it running for days on end, and I don't fancy having any old Tom, Dick or Harry looking through and planting any number of shity things in it's deapths.

So I need to get myself a Good Cheap/Free firewall that will not get in the way of my sea enjoyment, but will keep the Stanley Jobsons of this world out.

Any recommendations?

Cheers
Stuart.

I use Zone Alarm Pro. But you can get the normal Zone Alarm for free from here - www.zonelabs.com/store/content/home.jsp

Go to downloads and download the Firewall only one.

Zone labs is pretty restrictive in it's usage (the last version I used (free) didn't support VPN or various other techy things). Generally speaking we all use SPF (Sygate Personal Firewall) from www.sygate.com or OutPost (which works as an ad blocker as well) from www.outpost-firewall.com/

I use Zone Alarm Pro with no problems. However, I also run my connection through a wireless router, so in effect I have a rudimentary hardware firewall (NAT, packet filtering, static port mapping and DMZ).
I get quite a lot of traffic hitting the router but nothing at all gets to the PCs.

The wireless bit also means I can get PH anywhere in the house or garden on my iPAQ

I use a couple of hundred Checkpoints, several dozen Symantec Enterprise Firewalls (Raptor for the old school), plenty of Netscreens, a load of Pix's and a smattering of Linux based stuff...but it's my job!

I use ZA (free) at home - no problems with the VPN connection into the office, just need to remember to set the corporate IP address as 'trusted'.

Well, Zone Alarm is now up and running!

It blocked 132 attempts to in less than 10 seconds!

Makes me wonder what or who is trying to get at my computer!

I just installed Symantec's Internet Security 2004 for my father - Good stuff and allows me to configure access to his PC via PCAnywhere (also a Symantec product) into his system...

The firewall portion includes and integrated facility to identify possible intruders... (I hope you speak Chinese, however, because that is where a lot of them originate)
