at the risk of coming across all chav why don't we have a car stereo section?

i really need some advice on a high fidelity system using matched amps and speakers, but without spending a fortune- and i need lots of tech info. The audio forums i can find are into "how loud can i go" which is really not my thing.

can i anyone point me in the right direction?

(p.s. its to go into a very large landcruiser being prepped for overlanding through Africa/ middle east.)

Unlike most cars you should have enough room for decent accoustics in a boxy lancruiser although a vehicle is less than idea for a true 'hifi'.

Stereo gear is as cheap as chips now with loads of newish companies making some good quality stuff at reasonable prices but my experience when looking for the same is that its all been Barry'd up, with unreaslistic power claims and ziggy looks frown

I used to fit out big systems for sound offs many many years ago when there wasn't much else other than mainstream like Trio/Kenwood, Clarion, JVC, and Alpine, but now the choice is wild.

I would go for decent component speakers in the front and rear doors with the tweets mounted forward enough so that they don't get obscured by bodies and thus you won't lose the highs due to obstruction. Try and find the best quality units you can for the mids/bass (not sub bass) in the doors. 6" speakers will give you subtle bass if the door is of decent construction but if you want a firmer sound I would get someone to make you up some decent door build pods to sit the speakers in. If you go that route you should be able to hide the drivers out of sight which helps no end. I'm not a fan of big subs with massive throw distance because I dont listen to mad sub bass lines like the hard core/drum n' bass crew do, but if you have room for a couple of 8" subs in the rear panels in the boot, this will still allow you your boot space - which by all accounts you will be needing wink

they won't nick it all- as its all being hidden in various clever and interesting ways

anyway they'll have to get in past the deadlocks, security film and metal grills first and teh rather grumpy dog!

HSV- have room for 6" components in front doors and 4" speakers in rear doors (both attached on a home made pod amde from hardwood ply) and i can fit in a single 10" sub in a vented 3cubic foot enclosure that is part of a rear drawer system housing a hidden safe as well as some otehr interesting bits and bobs. I already have a nice bluetooth pioneer head unit (has twin RCA output at the back to make wiring easier) i also have an older 2 channel bridgeable alpine amp taht gives 130w RMS bridged at 4ohms.

So what wattage sub would i want matched to that amp? can i run a 2ohm sub off a 4ohm amp to give more control or doesn't it work that way (i'm not much good at electrics!)

Will have one amp controlling 4 channels- but do i need to make sure that all the speakers in the car can handle roughly similar power outputs? Also some 6" component speakers have seperate crossovers and some dont- how can those wthout crossover boxes work? do i need to spend enough to get components with crossovers? also i do i need to make sure that the 4" speakers can handle the same amount of power as the fronts (which is going to be hard)

Sub wise- does it matter what i get or do i just whack any old sub in- and is my amp man enough for the job? for wiring up the sub amp do i get a 4 channel amp that has some sort of LPF output or do i need to install yet another crossover somewhere- if so do i do it pre 4 channel amp- or take a crossover from a speaker signal?

does it matter what quality speaker cables i use?

skip the rear speakers - they only drag the sound stage backwards and muddy the quality

hopefully this suits the specific music you want to play, a vented enlosure will be louder at particular frequencies but not others. I prefer a small sealed enclosure for a 10", but then i like metal so lots of fast, tight drums; very little very very low long bass

No! You may kill the amp, or at least trigger the protection circuits

if you go for 4 speakers, yes. But don't.

Also some 6" component speakers have seperate crossovers and some dont- how can those wthout crossover boxes work?
not so well as the ones with, on the whole. Usually a single capacitor on the tweeter feed to kill the lower frequencies. You tend to get what you pay for....

do i need to spend enough to get components with crossovers?
I would look around £100-200... hard not to buy a reasonable set in this range

also i do i need to make sure that the 4" speakers can handle the same amount of power as the fronts (which is going to be hard)not hard if you leave them out!

Sub wise- does it matter what i get or do i just whack any old sub in- and is my amp man enough for the job? for wiring up the sub amp do i get a 4 channel amp that has some sort of LPF output or do i need to install yet another crossover somewhere- if so do i do it pre 4 channel amp- or take a crossover from a speaker signal? your 2 channel is going to struggle a bit if you want to go with the 3cuft vented.... you'll need a sub with some power to move the air. In fact, I'd say 200w RMS is porbably minimum to be happy and balanced with amped fronts. You will need an LPF somewhere, a seperate box if not on the amp (or your head unit may do it for you).

does it matter what quality speaker cables i use?No. But some poeple will scream different. Spend as much money as it takes to make you happy smile
Also, http://www.talkaudio.co.uk/vbb/ , http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/ and http://www.bcae1.com should give you plenty of bedtime reading and fun planning spending wink

wwo thanks defblade

re bass- dont want low loud bass- just want controlled base that adds a nice kick to the system-

ref rears- do want some rears as the fronts are hidden at the bottom of the doors and i think the sound may get lost somewhat- think the rears will add definition.

You won't believe the difference that running your fronts from a proper amp makes compared to a HU.
Mount the tweeters up higher and it'll pull the sound right up as far as your ears are concerned.

If you're not sure, get a tidy 2nd hand 2 channel amp from talkaudio for the front, you can always sell it on again if you really want 4 speakers after.
