I have what sounds to me like awheel bearing noise coming from the front of my 156. Just had bearing on both sides changed (you could feel play in them both) and expected the noise to go. Some of it has (probably that associated with the bearings) but some still remains. It seems to get louder under braking and is most noticable at around 40mph as a sort of grumble/moan (sorry about the poor description). There is no pulsation felt in the brake pedal so I assume not a warped disc. There is some vibration through the steering at around 70, but I had just assumed that I need to get the wheel balanced.

Any thoughts?

Get your wheels aligned and re-balanced. That could be source of the problems wheel wobble.

As for the moan/hum is one of the brakes binding at all?

How worn are your tyres?.
Both my 2.0 156's did this (as appose top the GTA which didn't), the tyre noise goes through the roof when they are worn. I wrongly assumed it was the bearings first time even the dealers agred and agreed to change them under warrenty. Whilst I was waiting I changed the Tyres and the noise vanished.

I can't actualy explain why, but the symptoms were exactly as you described.

I agree with Mitch.
Worn tyres on 156s sound just like knackered bearings.

A few things to consider, the tyres are only about 1/4 worn, but are some farily cheap nasty things (on it when I bought the car). I have just swapped them from the back so they don't last forever! Changing the front upper wishbones this week, so wil have a good look at the brakes whilst at it.

Could be the cheapo tyres still, but I suppose it could also be the upper wishbone bush which has gone and is altering the geometry and hence increasing the road noise. My monies still on the tyres though.

Does the Wishbone creak, they usually do after a while and it's then time to change.

Wishbone occaisionally creaks, but I think it is actually beyond the creak stage. I had a closer look yesterday and there is still some movement that shouldn't be there, (which I thought was the wheel bearing). Loks like it is coming from the wishbone. Hopefully after swapping them later this week (when time allows)everything should behave as normal!

Cheers for the suggestions guys. I changed the upper wishbones which were definitly in need of swapping, but the noise was still there. Out of curisoity I then swapped the wheels back around to how they were when I got the car and the noise has pretty much gone. Proving that it was due tot he tyres. I can't believe that a part worn tyre from the back with no obvious sign of uneven wear could make so much noise.
