Everywhere is gloom and doom. The media is in apocalyptic mode. Even PH is a repository of no-hope blackness. Let's start a Good News Recession thread. All the stuff that is positive and wonderful. Here's my list to start with:

1. Man Made Global Warming is off the agenda.
2. Climate Change taxes have been forgotten
3. Used Range Rovers are dead cheap
4. Now you can buy that three-bed house you could never afford
5. Oil prices are coming down
6. Your savings are now safe in Northern Rock etc
7. The January sales are going to be incredible

Your turn ...

Edit: Gloomsters .. go and start your own thread!

Recession - those with lots of liquid cash will get rich or richer. Everyone else will do well to stay on an even footing.

Hopefully in a few months the traffic will be a lot lighter, especially around Canary Wharf and east London.

I have been holding off trying to get on the property ladder for the last year and a half, predicting that house prices were becoming unsustainable. I didn't want to get a huge mortgage and find property prices nosedived.

I am now on about 5k p/a more than the beginning of 2007, and where I work it could never collapse as it would take out the majority of the UK's administration for Unit Trusts/PEPs and ISAs. The FSA wouldn't let it happen. We seem to be doing o.k as financial companies tend to outsource their administration/back office work in more difficult times.

So no real recession worries for me at the moment.

I want to see house prices down to a sensible level, then I can get on the ladder. So if a recession put things back into perspective, then it will be welcome for people in secure employment wanting their first home.

I know it's good to be positive, but....

Don't make the mistake of thinking you're immune to this crap.

I did - working for a company turning over £12 billion Euros, just been on a nice little jolly to the Algarve in recognition of my results over the last year, then on Thursday it was all over - salary, car, healthcare, pension, all gone in a half hour meeting.

So to all those smug bds thinking they're immune, and to all those who have been sniping at anyone asking benefit related questions, you may want to consider winding your necks in, because you may very well be next for the chop.

I totally agree. My department and division is making good money, but the top management have taken the opportunity to reduce headcount - they know we will absorb the extra work, but make more money per member of staff.

I never quite understood this kind of blind cost cutting, Im assuming you were doing an outstanding job and making your company lots of money (enough to justify a free trip to the algarve no less), yet in some random hatchet jobbery you're gone in the blink of an eye...

was your "part" of the business unprofitable? you'd have thought cherry picking the good people then ditching the dead weight would be the way to go...

Hope you're back on your feet soon.

Well we are doing quite well, the Managing Director has recorded a telephone message to all employees stating we are in a very good position!!

We are also getting new business, recently won/renewed a couple of contracts, and acuired a new office block.

I think we are pretty immune as we run on a tight ship staff wise anyway, and normal staff turnover would negate the risk for large scale redundancies.

General opinion amongst Managers and the Managing Director is that we tend to do better in these circumstances as companies look to outsource.

Thanks.

I've not left yet.... but, a flavour of the situation is this. About 2/3rds of our customers make good money, the other 1/3rd make a small loss.

We did think that we'd just cull the poor performers and keep the strong ones - which may have meant a couple of redundancies, but instead, the decision was taken to pretty much pull out of UK retail instead, meaning almost all head office staff and all field management are gone.

I am pretty worried myself at the moment.

Not disputing this, but what industry are you in? Local authority?
