Engine cuts out - 2000 X Ibiza 1.4 Cool/S

As the title says. Here's what happens....
Driving along, all is well with the world, then suddenly the dash lights flicker on and off, the engine loses power and will not respond to the throttle and eventually dies.
Got it running again with jump leads (the battery was fully charged but wouldn't turn over at all but the jump leads seemed to help) and the engine would idle OK but no throttle. Then the dash lights started flashing. Each time they came on the throttle kicked in then went back to idle again and then died after a few minutes. From that point on the engine wouldn't turn over at all.
Car is 8 years old with 107K on the clock, had the battery replaced only 2 months ago and apart from the radio unit (common on these) has never missed a beat. We managed to tow it home (only 5 miles luckily) in the dark without incident but it's too dark now to see what might be the problem.
Any ideas?
