I started a right debate on the ZR1Net. Some guy from Manchester just asked about Improving the brakes and I gave him some advice. Now there is this big old debate. The Americans think the brakes are great unless you are an 'extreme road racer' where as us Brits and Germans think thy are crap.

From that I conclude that all of us over this side of the pond must be extreme nutters behind the wheel.

We have corners, narrower roads, traffic jams, badly maintaned roads etc. to deal with. We need brakes more often than they do !

Also we drive our cars , whereas all they seem to do is stick them in an air conditioned garage and then cruise to the local diner once a month.

No wonder they think the brakes are great.

My C4 brakes were "great" until I took it around Castle Coombe, after about 4 laps the brakes were gone.

Hence the Brembo upgrades......

Yeah. Loads say they drive 'em hard but one thing I noticed when I was out there for the 50th was how clean their wheels were. I only have to drive 30 miles and my wheels are black from brake dust.

I keep saying to them the brakes might have been quite good back in 1990 but things move on. Even the Lambo Countach has crap brakes by todays standards.

Latest quote from ZR1Net ref brakes -

If we all used the brakes like Rupert does, the aftermarket brake
business wouldn't be as lucrative. No doubt that big, expensive brakes
are more often crutches for poor driving skills than they are really
necessary.

Well, they are American....

Physics is the problem

ZR1 weighs 3500lbs add 300lbs (american driver) = 3800lbs.

Brakes on ZR1 are the size of 4 match boxes.

You try slowing nearly 2 tons from 180 mph with a pad swept area of about 16 square inches.

No wonder the brakes are shite.

I must say that the EBC Red Stuff pads I've just switched to cause much less dust than the standard pads - other C5 owners were commenting on my clean wheels at Gaydon.

Come on, I think you got your sums wrong. Shouldn't it be 300lb car and 3500lb American ??

I'm on a diet of rice cakes and lotus tea from now on...

BTW anyone really done 180 MPH in a ZR-1? Mine felt like it was gonna fall apart at 130...

167 in mine. Its been better since I put new bearings on all 4 corners but has never felt as calm as my Supra did at high speed.
