It's friday, PH needs a good debate.

Having recently been a victim of phone raping (i.e. someone going through it when you leave it alone for any length of time)I wondered how many people actually do this?

I came into work this morning and my female colleagues were all "yeah god I do that, the best time is the shower, cos you get enough warning time to put it back and let the light go out". yikes

Quite frankly I am really shocked at how common and acceptable people seem to think this is. It's a complete invasion of privacy and more often than not you'll see something you don't like.

Do you do it? Why? Can you even begin to justify it?

I don't do it to my girlfriend's phone, and neither does she to mine (I think hehe ), but I'd say to do it implies, without question, a distinct lack of trust.

My ex "phone raped" me.
All trust was lost, and things went rapidly downhill from there.
I have nothing to hide on my phone and would gladly show the girlfriend IF she asked.

p.s. love the term phone rape btw

Horrible practice,

My mum did this once to me when i was younger and found something she really wished she hadn't read.

I'd like to think my missus would never do this and I've got no hang-ups to do it to her.

Privicy is privicy as far as i'm concerned.

I'd say it's outrageous, and I'd me mortified if my girlfriend was looking through my phone. There's no need to, there's nothing on it, I've nothing to hide, it just stinks of mis-trust.

Keylock with pin-code would be a good way to stop it though thumbup

You can't say that then not tell us what she found? hehe

Easy solution if you are worried about this is to always keep your phone with you. Problem solved.

See I fundamentally disagree with this.

If you are in a grown up trusting relationship you should be able to leave your phone/mail/computer switched on unattended and not expect your partner to go through them.

To have to resort to hiding your phone and putting a pin etc on things suggests that she/he doesn't trust you and you know she/he is going to go through your things, invade your privacy. So you then try to prevent her, she knows you are trying to prevent her, starts "you've obviously got something to hide ste" then it goes around in a great big circle.

Surely addressing the trust issue would be the better route?

I am not aware of anyone ever having done this to me. my g/f and i will answer eachother phones if the other is driving or in the bath, etc to save it going to vm, or will tell the other they've had a text and would they like it read to them/checked but that's about it.

If i caught someone snooping through my phone without my permission though it would be the end of my relationship with them, whoever unless the excusse was VFG (like i have just awoken from a 3 week coma...)

Mmm I like your thinking, I think a divorce for me then, my wife was not happy at what she found, a text message declaring undying love, afraid it was a wrong number frown

I dont think she tried to do it after then ... but pin comes in handy ...

My mate did this to his fiance, found out she had been sending pics of her lady parts to a guy from work.

Personally I wouldn't be interested in doing it to a partner as if I had such low self esteem about the relationship I would just leave.

Exactly. I have the ability to access my g/f’s e-mail anytime I please but would never think of doing so except after asking her and letting her know the specific reason why. On doing so I would only ever look for what I was after and ignore anything else, other then perhaps to let her know she had unread mail from a friend she might be waiting for if my eyes passed over it on the way. Even then there is no way I would open that mail without her asking me to.

Trust is everything.

Unless you're up to something, why hide it?

One of the keys to a long lasting relationship is never hide anything from each other as this is when the trust/mistrust issue arises, hence checking each others phones

The other thing is, I leave stuff on my phone that I wouldn't want her to see, particularly around birthday and Xmas times, her gift ideas etc!

It's not a question of hiding it though is it? This is about people picking up someone's phone and going through it without permission. Next stop your wallet, etc.

If my g/f asked if she could have a look through my phone i'd pass it to her but i would want to know what she was looking for (might save her an hour!)
