Drilling holes in wood
Discussion
Basically I have 500 1" thick pieces of wood, they are approx 300mm x 100mm.
I need to get 16 holes drilled into each one of the five hundered pieces of wood, they are all the same size, so I guess it's just a case of setting up the machine and letting it run.
Anyone know what you call a company that will do this job, or what kind of a machine will be able to perform this task at reasonable cost?

Not too complicated with the correct machinery but time-consuming. You really need somone with a CNC machine. Set-up, put in as many pieces as the bed will allow, press GO and watch it drill. Take the pieces out and replace with the next lot.....and so on.
No need to restrict your search to woodworkers - lots of manufacturers of plastic whatsits have CNC's.
You could try asking on www.ukworkshop.co.uk
I, too, am intrigued as to what you are making.

what you are looking for is a company with a multi-borer. most kitchen and bedroom companies will have one for drilling shelf studs and the like. may also be worth trying and engineering company as they may have a similar machine. cant remember of the top of my head how many drilling heads said machines hold but as its a small piece would probably be limited to 4/6 holes per go. dont worry about jigs, the machines have stops for that sort of thing.
hope this helps.

You will need to go to a joinery of some sort. All it involves is setting up a pillar drill and jig of some sort. Shoulndt take more than an hour to complete.
Depending on the neccessary accuracy and wether it is hardwood.Better would be a horizontal borer with a good auger bit and a punch jig made.
About 1 ft x 4 inches . . 16 holes . . some sort of display stands for a shop?
We used to make similar to display various castors for furniture.

An hour to drill 8000 holes. Are you the worlds most optimistic optimist?
£1 a hole.
