Gordon's Wine Bar, on the corner just opposite Embankment tube. Pokey little place but has a great atmosphere - only sells wine though as the name suggests.

The Porterhouse, just off Strand is pretty good too.

Gordons Wine Bar, Villiers Street - the road that runs up from Embankment to Charing Cross.

I'd avoid Gordon's. Always a foul stench of body odour in that place and full of middle aged men in trench coats.

Retoxbar in Covent Garden is ok, or The Langley near Covent Garden tube.
Or the Light Bar in the St Martin's Lane Hotel.

Or more traditional pubs - The Coal Hole on the Strand.

It has a certain aroma, I'll give you that (we usually go outside anyway), but I don't recall any trench coats when I've been there - I guess it depends when you go.

Also in Covent Garden in the middle bit down the stairs (whatever that is called) there is a pub in the corner under the arches which is quite nice... if you manage to grab a little alchove biggrin

Can't beat the Nags Head for a pint in Covent Garden. It's a dive, but it beats the Punch and Judy.
