filters or trumpets???
Discussion
can someone please explain to me the benefits of having a set of 'trumpets' sucking air straight into the carb over standard air filters???
i'm looking at upgrading my car to twin carburettors and like the idea of having four trumpets poking out the side of the engine but was wondering if there is any real advantage over having a pair of stonking air filters on the carbs other than aesthetics and probably cost (don't need to buy no expensive K&N's )
also, surely there must be some kind of "filter" to stop leaves, twigs, small birds and rabbits being sucked into your carb which would right-royally bugger it up!
and would the car have any big problems starting from cold in the winter with exposed carbs??? - just something i thought could cause a problem
cheers for your advice (again)

Always use a good air filter unless you consider the engine as a consumable. Dust and grit sucked into the engine tends to collect in the oil, turning it into a nice grinding paste. And if the engine ever sucks in anything sizeable, you can wreck it. A good filter doesn't cost enough (power, or money) to matter, and increases the life of the engine significantly.
Trumpets actually increase the airflow potential of carbs and TB's, and can be usefull to contain "stand off" if you have a full race cam etc.
You can get filter "socks" that fit over individual trumpets.
If you don't need full trumpets than a nicely radiused intake to the TB's is still worthwhile in terms of airflow (the so called "stub stack").

Never run your expensive engine without a proper air filter. If you would like to know how it feels to run without one, then id suggest a handful of dry sand, and then attempt to inhale it....get the picture?
Not nice at all!
Theres absolutely no reason not to use a good filter these days as the pressure drop is minimal...if its good enuff for F1 to use a filter, then its good nuff for you.

I had a mk2 escort with a modifyed engine twin 40s and trumpets, they sounded wicked when revved but like mine with no filters on it is just like us breathing dust in and not having a drink you would block up and not go any further if you cherish your pride and want to keep it running use air filters or if you insist on keeping trumpets on then look around and buy a filter that goes over the trumpets .
