forgive my ignorance but i don't get the morality of this at all

people like Westminster council have in excess 300 million to invest

what's all that about then ? Surely that means that council tax is too high or they arent spending enough on road sweeping and removing graffiti and chewing gum ?

I thought local authorities were there to maintain the boroughs, not be run as vast money making and turnover schemes with 100's of millions making 6.5% in offshore accounts ?

the interest that they must make on their fortunes... exactly where does this go ?

Or they've collected a load of cash at the start of the year from Council tax and Central Government. Then stick it in high interest accounts, until they need to draw down on it to pay for services over the rest of the year.

I was having a think about this myself t'other day. I couldn't come to a conclusion I was happy with but bear with me.

Yes they are taking too much money which is imorral. Then what if they invested well enough in order to be self sufficient and we not need to pay that much council tax. I was woken from my dreamworld when I realised that no matter how much a councils millions invested in foreign banks would accumulate in interest that benefit would never, never be passed on to the idiot sods who pay their tax.

Still, with all the interest the councils make they could buy a ship so that the feckless could enjoy even more freebies they simply don't deserve.

I feel a wave of free XBox's for the messes to improve their social skillz is in order.

Westminster Council is a well run council with some of the lowest council tax in the UK. Far from being pilloried, they obviously do something right.

Here are their tax bands:

A 458.41
B 534.82
C 611.12
D 687.62
E 840.42
F 993.23
G 1146.03
H 1375.24

Here is Kingston Upon Thames that probably doesn't have £300m in the bank.

A £846.50
B £987.58
C £1,128.67
D £1,269.75
E £1,551.92
F £1,834.08
G £2,116.25
H £2,539.50

Totally agree with you Jackal.

I was under the impression that the council got money in and them went about spending it on services!

There should be NO surplus.

The Metropolitan police had investments in Iceland too, whats that all about???

There were overcharging locals thats the bottom line, and its indefensible.

I have to say this is all news to me

nationalise EVERYTHING.... public services should do just that, provide a public service... nothing else. Bring back Tony Benn thats what I say.

If Spellthorne council dare to raise my council tax because of icelandic losses they will pretty soon find themselves in the unfortunate position of having a bright banana yellow 968 clubsport drive into the front windows of their council offices at Mach 3.6

and another thing ... how the Hell can that Goodwin fella get 20 million in salary over the amount of years it took him to systematically turn RBS into an international finnacial time bomb ? I just don't understand that.... he even got knighted as well. The mind boggles.

200k. So about 2/3rds of Iceland.

Kingston upon Thames on theother hand from my example earlier is about 150k.

I cannot understand why Kingston council tax is so high. I was paying nigh on £1000 last year for a one bed flat. They do have to make a contribution to the upkeep of Richmond Park though. Prehaps the cartridges cost a fortune come culling time. (or the pulic servants are paid too much scratchchin) Should be happening about now thinking about it.

just highlights even more stupidity:

so a family who can afford a place in Grosvenor square for 9 million pay 1375 a year whereas someone struggling in a 380k 3 bed semi in North kingston pays 2116

Yes, to justify the same amount (or more) of cash they need the following year because if they have cash in their budget left over the budget they are given for the following year will be less. So they tend to buy things they wouldn't normally do, I know of one that bought a few Wii type toys for the staff rooms and pointless office equipment to use up the extra left over.

PS. If you ever want to do business with a council do it towards the end of the financial year.

I can assure you that the Liberal Council is only too happy to have one of the highest, if not the highest council tax in the country.

Councils need a surplus, as individuals it is sensible to have savings against a rainy day, the council needs some contingency funds against big expenses. Also if a budget is given saying I will spend £50 month on car servicing the garage won't take kindly to being paid at £50 a month they might want the full £600 in one go, the councils where told to invest their money in a range of banks and given a list of AAA* banks to use.

Councils can't win really. They are always going to be over or under budget and people will complain accordingly.

+1

The money is for planned future work which has not started yet. The public are very quick to blame the council.
