Acetone. Though be careful and dont run the carpet - pull it upwards gently or you'll just smear the mess around.

Not so daft...

Have you, or can you get any off cuts?

We had a loose hamster accident in the living room and it chewed a nice hole through.

The solution was to cut a perfectly round hole with a very sharp blade, and swap it for a 'plug' from the off cut.

Only works on the right type of carpet (perhaps somethign with a bit of texture/colour to it, no patterns obviously) but its almost imperceptible.

Worth a try first at least for next to no cost.

works well with patterned carpet too if you are careful with your cutting! Biggest problem is usually that you get a nice clean fresh looking circle of carpet in an otherwise grubby faded one.

Careful with acetone, depending on what the carpet is made of! You might just melt a great hole in your carpet. wink

Indeed. If the carpet is synthetic, Acetone could shag it. (See what I did there?) hehe

If not, acetone is prob the best best, but applying it to the carpet in situ probably won't work. As acetone is applied, it dissolves the colourful polish which then sinks down lower and penetrates the lower fibres of the carpet. Deep, even more permanent stain results. What you could do is cut out a flap of carpet around the stain (but not all the way round, 3 sides of a square, that sort of thing.) Turn the flap upside down and apply acetone to teh underside of the stain. The polish will dissolve and the solution willl run through the carpet into a handy contaner (very important). You'll be removing the stain in the same direction as the way it arrived so severe carpet trauma will be avoided.

Once the stain is sufficiently removed, the flap fits down (perfectly sized) and will be used carpet so will blend in nicely with the rest of the area.

Eucalyptus oil with carpet shampoo. Dab very gently to try and lift it off the carpet. Then get one of those dirty great big carpet cleaning machines from HSS Hire with the cleaning kit and do the whole carpet. Worked on my girlfiend's WHITE carpet when her cat traipsed engine oil all through the hall, front room, back room, up the stairs, across the landing and in the bedrooms!

The cat was off my Christmas card list after that... but not as much as whoever left the oil lying about where she could walk through it.

I'm guessing the nail varnish is oil based so hopefully should work.

Use a 12 bore, just blast away until the nail varnish is gone.

Have you been in my house or something?

one (previously full) bottle of (apparently very expensive) nailvarnish found bang centre of the biggest, creamest carpet in the house.

So far, only acetone has made a dent, but it's not that effective. Be careful not to soak tho (asthe missus did), or the carpet stretches and goes bumpy. Thankfully ours dried straightish, we're now doing 5-10 mins a day reducing the badness. At current rate, we expect an almost gone stain in about a month.

Neighbours had this, couldn't fix it and ended up with a new carpet on the insurance.
