Mrs Trackside closed a thread as PH is not a chatroom. Should Ph have a chatroom?

I seem to remember there was one very briefly (not sure if it was official) however everyone logged on using other members names and generally made a nuisance of themselves.

Vixpy in particular biggrin

If people are inclined surely it would just be easier to use the instant messaging service on facebook or msn? Facebooks one is actually quite good.

It might cut down on the ste in here, but it would increase the cliquiness IMHO and as said it has been tried before.

There's an MSN thing if that's your bag although I've found it hard going as nobody uses their PH name.

On balance, no.

Simon - you've been around long enough to know wink

It's been tried about 4 or 5 different times now - and although there was initial interest and support for it, and everyone jumping up and down for it ..... in reality is fizzled out after 2 or 3 days.

Skype is your friend.

You can set up a group chat and it will keep the history for you between you logging in and out, until MSN where if you log out you lose it all.

It could be a solution to some of the guff threads here. Then again it could also attract more numpties.

P&P gets (wrongly) used as a chat room at times, I have had chats via e-mail with some people on here and the other night there were a group of posters who dissapeared off to a chat room.
Would haymarket not prefer to keep all of the PHers in it's own domain? Surely some advertising revenue could be created from a chat room!

I say "No".
It's always been a forum. If a PH chatroom failed before, then I wouldn't waste any time trying again.

PH already has GG for random questions, and I know lots of chatting goes on when MSN addresses get swapped about. There's also a Facebook PH page.

Also the best way to get chatting people is to go along to a local meet, on a national PH event. I went along to PistonFest 2007, and met a fair few people, including some "famous" PH names wink I also take part in alot of PistonHeads East Anglia events. I know it's not ideal for some people to get along to alot of events, but once or twice a year is possible for 99.9% of people.
Then that would negate any reason for a chatroom.
Just my thought, obviously.

One of the problems with a chat room idea is that most PH banter happens during work hours, and in the office (but shh, don’t tell the boss unless you are the boss )

As such, most (large) companies will have blocked external chat programs like MSN / Yahoo Messenger / Skype / IRC etc.

So all you end up with is a bunch of drunken chatters in the evening instead biggrin

TBH the threads work better anyway as there is a small semblance of a chance that the topic will remain or at least evolve from each heading rather than just being a complete free for all!

And finally - just think how it would drive the spelling police up the wall .... idea ... you know, a chat room is not such a bad idea after all ... hehe

I use gabbly to chat. You just type gabbly.com/ in front of the website address you use as the host. So here would be...

http://www.gabbly.com/pistonheads.co.uk/gassing/fo...

Easy and instant. No need to register or add friends as per MSN

we have a chat room on a forum I help run and it does work, in that topics aren't diverted off topic and all the truly random stuff goes on in the chat room.

It's not moderated so no extra burden on the PH team, it isn't visible to everyone (we have membership fees which we rely on to maintain the site not advertising), even if you are a member and not interested then you can disable it.

There are some very good friendships built there as like skype/msn you can have more of a conversation than email/topics also like meetings you chat to strangers.

That said it can get cliquey (sp?)

I agree that chat rooms can get cliquey, but that is also true of the forums.
The other aspect is that PH users would stay on one site, and hopefully we could deter the idiots with "ignore". Easier said than done i agree when you have someone spouting rubbish.

As you say kinky (hows the pup?), I have been around a long time, and didnt ever use the forums. I do feel that PH has changed in it demographic though, and as a lot of the forum topics become conversational, with minimal time between posts.

Just thought it may work, be worth considering.

It would be interesting but give it 5 mins and wait for flaming, obnoxious remarks and death threats.

Also how would you Police it as the messages would be instant. Having a quick look at 'the other site' that a lot of Pistonheads seem to frequent I can see all hell breaking loose
(or is that lose wink )

Here you go a classic example of how it may progress
