Okay so back in 1979 when I was a wee nipper I went through the (almost mandatory ?) phase of being briefly interested in stamps, which I hasten to add didnt last long ! However, my old maiden aunts started sending me First Day Covers when they came out.

They kept this up all the way till one died and the other went into a home, at which point I signed up to Royal Mail and got them to carry on sending them, on the basis that it would be a shame to break up the flawless collection. Now I've got each and every single one of the damn things filling a cupboard, for nigh on 30 years. My theory for continuing being that, a complete collection of 30 (40, 50 etc) years worth of FDC's, well that must be worth a little sum, an investment, surely ?

However I was speaking with someone last night who purports to know about these things who says it's worth, ooh, the right side of £30. At best.

Anyone with more knowledge of the area than I able to give a ballpark indication of what such a collection MIGHT be worth ... something, or sod all ?

To be honest, I'd get a professional opinion.

Phone Stanley Gibbons on Monday - 0207 836 8444. Ask for the valuations dept. (or used to be that anyway) and explain what you have, and if it's of any worth.

It will take all of about 30 seconds I'd guess.

think they are worth a bit more

his words not mine

"This is the British Relay TV Official. It is estimated that only 30 full set covers exist and I know of only two others. One being typed addressed, the other as this. Scott's catalogue value on this cover is £325 and because of it's rarity I wouldn't sell it for less than £275". smile

and that's just 1

I found all my dads first day covers for the last 20 years or so up in the loft last weekend. A quick look on ebay would suggested they were worth sod all, so I put them back int he loft where they can stay for another 20 years.

That's the rare exception - not the norm. And FDCs from the PO are just the norm.
