Music in retail store...(advice needed)
Discussion
One of my friends owns a retail store that's just been "caught" playing commercial radio (apparently this is illegal, public performance or something like that?). Anyway they have been given a choice between paying a silly money or turning the radio off.
How can she get around this issue? Are there any podcasts or similar she could use? Just a bit of pop music to keep the staff happy really

"Caught". As in by the PRS? If so tell them to f
k off as you're not interested in their demands. I co-own a beauty salon and kept getting calls off them telling me I needed a licence to play copywritten music where clients could hear it. I bought it for one year then looked into it more and didn't renew. When they rang telling me I owed (something like) £30 I told them I only listened to commercial radio and the station had already paid royalties to the performer/writer in order to broadcast the song. I got a revised bill for a lower amount which I ripped up and sent back to the PRS with a note attached telling them to stick their "certificates" up their arse. Not heard anything since but their are lots of forum threads elsewhere discussing the PRS and their bullying tactics. Don't pay.

When I was working in the UK a couple of years ago, I too had a call from these jokers, asking how many workers we had, and did we have a licence to use the radio. I thought it was a wind up, told the bint to sod off and haunt someone else - never heard a thing since!

If this is the kind of new jobs that the government hark on about, God help the UK's future - they add absolutley zero contribution to the health of the economy, istead, help stifle it by extorting more money from already struggling businesses - hateful people - it's not work, it's anti work!

The notion of musicians getting paid for their work - how repugnant. Next they'll be asking people to pay for the goods they've picked up before leaving shops... asking people people to pay the hairdresser before leaving a salon... etc. We must stop the rot before people who work start getting something in return for it!

My remark was somewhat tongue in cheek - there are the likes of eg. Madonna and there are small struggling bands. Which bands get 99% of airplay on mainstream radio stations, of the sort you're likely to hear in a salon or shop? Also - musicians *want* their music played on the radio; it boosts sales. Of what benefit is stopping thousands of extra people from hearing their music?
I find the whole notion of a shop or whatever having to pay for what the radio station has already paid for (and that can only ultimately bring in more sales for the artist) ridiculous.

The vast majority of people who can hear the radio that is being played will have paid for a TV licence any way, giving them the right to listen to the radio.Sounds like you want paying twice. How is that fair?

For playing the radio? This is asinine. If you listen to the BBC, it's paid for by the TV License. If you listen to a commercial station, it's paid for by advertising.
Biggest con-job I have yet heard.
Yes - surely if everyone listening has already got a TV license then they are already legally covered.Biggest con-job I have yet heard.
Trying to get the money twice is a mean trick.
