City Traders - Daily Duties
Discussion
I know we've had lots of financial threads, so I thought I'd start another one
After hearing about the problems in the city and watching countless news snippets of traders i was just curious what an average traders day consist of.
You see them all the time on the phones, looking depressed on the bad days, cheering on the better days.
But what do they actually do? Watch the screens for potential rises and phone there clients to buy or vice versa?
I know there's a few traders on here Vesuvious et all. Can you shed some light on your shenanigans during the typical day?

Trader? I thought he was a lawyer?
As for what Traders do, it largely depends what they trade/whether they're a local or not etc.
A vast amount are just execution brokers who are told what to buy/sell and at what price by the system in front of their face (give or take a few percent depending on their Quant Funds risk corridor for example), which is fed financial information and churns out trades based on the companies strategy that the trader works for.
Now, if you're a "local" you trade your own money and for that, I have to say good luck! You need big cohonas, and in times like this, prayers answered.
Back in the old days of open outcry there used to be many small time locals on the floor of the LIFFE market (for example) who would do nothing much apart from jump on the back of the institutional orders, with small 1-10 lot trades, in the hope that the institutions had already done their homework. When open-outcry died out, so to do a vast number of these traders (no more free lunch - trading went screen based).
imho, it's the analysts who do the main work, and it's the analysts the financial institutions rely on to determine their internal strategies.
