MkV GTi Extended Warranty

Hello all,

What are people's thoughts regarding extending the manufacturer's warranty on the MkV GTi?

Mine expires in two weeks and as those of you in a similar situation will know, VW want £565 for their all component unlimited mileage warranty. You could argue £89 of that includes VW's comprehensive Vehicle Assist service which I will buy anyway, so that's (arguably) £476 for the warranty.

I'm wondering how many of you have reached this stage and what decisions you've taken.

I've recently had the steering rack replaced which, to my knowledge, is the biggest warranty job.
I've not heard of engines/gearboxes going pop, has anyone here?

Also my car's on VW finance, so were the worst to happen I'd be paying every month for a car I could not afford to get back on the road, were I not to take the warranty.

Anyway, I guess I'm fishing for someone to say either, "£476, you'd be mad not to!", or "£476 you must be bonkers, use it to buy HBOS shares!!"

I'm currently going through exactly the same dilemna.
Do you know how much the limited cover extended warranty costs?
After much thought I have decided not to pursue the full monty extended warranty in view of cost but may be interested in a restricted version.

I would get the extended warrenty. Consider the fact that £480ish pounds is only about 4 hours VW labour...

The "named component" warranty is £352, that's unlimited mileage and seems to come with most of the VW Assist service. If you've had your notification through from VW re warranty expiry give them a call and they'll send an information pack with prices and full details of what's covered on the restricted warranty. The list looked pretty similar to those you see from the likes of Warranty Direct.
