Surreal isn't it? "In order to stop you being repressed and losing your freedom, we're going to repress you and and remove your freedoms."

"You're either with the Government, or you're on your own..."

Well, Miliband, I'm on my own.

It's like I say every time, and I'm paraphrasing C.S Lewis, that the worst tyranny is imposed on you "for your own good."

Does this mean the terrorists have won by making us turn the gun against ourselves?

How bizarre. Oh well.

Expect to see a huge growth in technology which renders such surveillance useless.

+1, there is already tons of it out there to be honest, from corporate sytems that just "do it for you" and personal software such as PGP.

Any half decent encryption is pretty much unbreakable and will result in the gubberment archiving lots of useless gibberish.

I invented such a device very recently and the home office took it off my hands immediately, threatening me with the Terrorism Act 2000 frown

So....What about using PGP then? I presume this makes all this technology pointless?
Or, are the stories of the FBI having a 'backdoor' true? - Tin foil hat at the ready.

"But the paper cited unnamed sources as saying ministers backed the plan “in principle,” and reported staff at GCHQ had “aggressively” marketed it in recent Whitehall briefings."

I wouldnt worry too much about GCHQ. They were listening to the phones belonging to the people who bombed Omagh in 1998. They let it go ahead, didnt warn anyone and wont use the evidence to prosecute anyone.

Yep, pretty much useless for finding terrorists, even a 1% false positive rate, which would be incredibly optimistic, would result in 600,000+ terror suspects in the UK alone. Worthless in this regard.

However, going the other route, using it to look up an individual, and get the dirt on them...it would probably work very well. Wonder how long before it gets used against opposition politicians.

Well, as its already been said, it's not as if we are not under surveillance anyway..

If you think about it, were you not even slightly impressed that post July bombings, they had video footage of the Terrorists in Leeds, Luton Train Station car park, numerous tube stations and even on the bus. They managed to track down and catch the guy that did a dexy's to Italy in under a week or so and managed to catch most/all of the suspects in a relatively short space of time.

In contrast to Maddie McCann going missing and there is simply nothing seen or heard of since. No cctv, no suspect cars, nothing, zip, nada. Now I'm only speculating, but if the Portuguese had more CCTV they may have found slightly more to go on perhaps? Maybe they wouldn't given the shocking professionalism of their so called Police service...

I don't agree with all the surveillance either, as it is big brother, but on the odd occasion I suppose it could be seen as being useful.

Made some nice news footage but not all that helpful in preventing the bombings though.

Not all that impressive when they tracked down and killed that Brazillian chap by mistake either. Perhaps investing all that money in more police, better training and reducing their paperwork so they can actually do some policing would be a more productive approach.

Putting so much faith in electronic surveillance means neglect in other areas, it's just like how there is too much reliance on speed cameras as opposed to real police on the roads, people dont speed past the cameras but otherwise act like morons in every other aspect of driving. It's one of those ideas that sounds great in some academics research paper but is actually rather counter productive in the real world.

I have to laugh really, do people actually think theres much chance of this kind of thing being a reality. Every site we go to can be monitored easily enough. Every phone call we make on our mobiles or landlines can be monitored easily enough. This is already the reality. The problem is though, who are they going to employ to "scrutinise" everyones digital communications. They will have to employ thousands upon thousands of people. Not going to happen.

Move along, nothing to see here.
