Warm up time.

Having replaced the fan and drained and flushed the cooling system I've been paying more attention to the temperature dial than usual. It takes about 10 mins to get up to 'normal', 90f, with a horizontal needle. I rarely go over 2000 rpm until the needle is at this position. I'm wondering if the thermostat may be opening too soon.

Is this usual or should it be heating up more quickly?

Steve I'd say it sounds fairly normal if you are driving it that gently - the coolant is heated by the combustion of the engine - gentle driving = less heat.

To be honest I'd say drive it with a few more revs and get it warmed up quicker - start it up and allow the oil time to get moving then drive it normally (OK not that hard!) but I think you'll be doing as much harm driving it that gently and prolonging the warm up period. Limit yourself to say 4 to 4.5k revs till its warmed up - and if you want to be really sure give it 10 mins or so after the gauge is at the normal position before you 'test' it

Thanks Barky, I'll take that as licence to get a little more enjoyment!!!

Unless I'm on a weekend jaunt I only have a 10 mile slow journey to work, if it's dry, so I don't get much chance to open out above 2000-3000rpm.
