TVR 'S' Racing

Could it happen at last - will the Tasmin series open its doors to the S's?

The TVRCC's Tasmin Challenge proved a lot of people wrong when Steve Lewis and his supporters successfully got a TVR series off the ground. The club racing has enjoyed considerable success with grid sizes similar to the Tuscans!

There has long been a discussion about whether the Tasmin Challenge should be opened up to the S series cars. The early cars used the same 2.8 V6 as used in the Tasmins and its sexier shape has many fans.

The series organisers are once again seeking to understand interest levels for allowing S's to race alongside the Tasmins.

So if you want to race in a TVR S in 2004 then shout now! Regulations will be written in November so you'll need to be quick!

Discuss it here or contact series coordinator Steve Lewis.

Just a thought, but you may want to open the series up to Tuscans, as there are a number of drivers who would like to fit the original rover v8 and race in a series that makes sence, cost wise. We reckon that 4/6 cars could be up for racing in something other then the Tuscan Challenge next year if the right option came along. The time could be right, and some drivers are more then willing to consider an attractive alternative as they have found it difficult to meet the costs of competing in all the tuscan rounds, some have only done 2/3 races as budgets are still in the £2500/£5000 per race weekend range.

I suspect the current Tasmin racers wouldn't be so keen on that as they'd be relegated to a secondary class behind those Tuscans. It's their series - they will want to compete against cars of similar speeds. The S's fall into that category and are of course the most beautiful TVR ever made...

The Tuscan is an S, 1988 ish It could be a good way of providing a new lease of life for the Tuscans, and Tasmin drivers could start "taking them over" as opposed to "overtaking them", longer term it could be good !!

I'd have a go.....IF... I had an S1, and I had pots of cash, and I could drive any quicker than my gran without losing bowel control, and I wasn't ushered into doing stacks of DIY every weekend. Hmmm, not for me methinks!

we have had a few drivers go halves currently in the tasmin series. In fact there might be a few current drivers that are wavering who might go halves in an existing car...

ref Tuscans. I've always fancied the idea of tuscans with 3.9 rover lumps and road tyres. the trouble is part of the ethos is to keep it single class racing so everyone has a chance of a flag win, and some close racing. tuscans would make it either multi class or would need to carry ballast or restrictors to even things up.

May be if we threw the sebate open to what would you like to race ( an realisticaly would not just a pipe dream) and how would we maintain a level playing field across all the models.

I'm not sure what advantage there is in adding any other type of car to the series. The intent of the series was (IIRC) to provide entry-level, low cost, single make racing.

The 'entry level' has proved to be quite high in terms of costs - Graham, I know you do all your own maintenance etc, but living v near Noel V8 I'm aware of how much time/money he's spent on Struan and Bruce's cars last year, and Simon's this year.

If anyone wants to enter the Tasmin series, they can buy a Tasmin (at relatively low cost) and race - an S will still cost more. The only possible benefit would be for someone who already has a suitable S and doesn't mind turning it into a race car. Its not as if the factor keeping people out the series is a lack of cars.

I'd love to give it a go myself, but can't afford it at the moment. One day...

And PeteH's V8S? 2.8 litres? add 50%... Maybe get SteveH in with his 'Tasmin' too. Except it wouldn't have a big enough fuel tank to finish a race...

Well the theory goes that there were a number of people that would love to come racing but have an aversion to the wedge ( for some reason) and wouldnt be seen deas in one. Opening it up to S1's would allow them to get around this.

Racing budgets mmm i must admit i dont understand how some people managed to spend quite so much ( and i did use a fair amount of proffesional help in the build of my car. and the setup). Racing is never going to be the cheapest toy in the box, but tasmin racing certainly isnt high cost and is cheaper than most.

I do admit though the cheapest way to come tvr racing would be to buy one of the current racing tasmins already available. there are about 3 off the top of my head.

How much are we talking about to buy an S, prep it/race it - mostly sorted without professional help and go halves with someone???

NOOOOO!! Could you imagine all the threads on here: "...my 3.9 Tuscan won't idle below 6000rpm. Could it be the throttle pot/ ECU/ air leak/ bad earth...?"

That would be my question, the 280i series was meant to be cheap, but by the time people had finishing blue printing engines and removing the pop up lights it wasn't cheap. Okay I already have the S1, but I don't really want to strip it out (It's been my mistress for the last 12 years )
So what should the regs be? Now my S1 has S3 style trailling arms - so would that make it ineligible?
And can we use the S4 brake upgrades?
