MURRY`S BIGGEST GAFF?

I have hesitated to post this as it could be quite contravertial but it has bothered me for the last 11years since it happened as it was never mentioned to my mind,well here goes.
It was at the last F1 race at Jerez Portugal in 1997,how can anyone forget the Schumacher/Villeneuve incident.Prior to this after the first pit stops I think ,Villeneuve was chasing down Schuey and they were closing on Ralf to lap him .Michael gets past and then its Jacque`s turn,and Murray Walker says....well does anyone else remember before I say it ?

OK ,Murray said "lets see if Ralf plays the white man", now in Murray`s defence he is rather old school and the term probably went back to his army days when it was probably quite commonplace.Iremember watching the highlights that evening and it was edited out.

In more recent years it would be considered racist,even when I was a kid ,but I think the expression may have grown up in the far east when the Allies were fighting the Japanese.If an enemy soldier appeared to surrender and was approached by an allied soldier he would then raise his arms releasing a pair of primed grenades(and other sneaky tricks),hence not playing the white man .Yes I know Murray fought in Europe.

I believe that its origin is racist: an idea that a "white man" is inherently more - pick your loaded adjective: "honest", "reliable", "honourable", "gentlemanly" - than persons of other races can be expected to be.
I suspect that it is one of the many contemptible relics of the Empire.

I remenber hearing him say that and yes, I did cringe!

A couple of other beauties were, "The Ayrton Senna chicken is starting to push it's way through the shell", and, "I'll stop the start watch".

What a guy! I always liked his expressions like, "Give him the sniff of an oily rag...", and, "He'll be in there like a rat up a drainpipe!"

I obviously didnt put that very well,I didnt actually lose sleep over it or think of it that often and I doubt anyone cares.The same could be said for 95% of the nonsense on PH,but if you dont remember it happening why bother to post. .

My fave was back when he still commentated on rallycross, and he was saying about the leader, " he can see perfectly through his clear windscreen" or something along those lines, next thing, guy goes off, straight into grass bank and out of race!! Quality

He'd found out something about the guy having worked out the positioning for a bunch of holes in the screen so that he'd be able to "see" throughout the race. Then Murray said that, and bang, he was out.

Murray is an absolute star, soooo incredibly enthusiastic about the sport, almost a child like love of it. Wonder what his view of the last few debacles is ....
