Skipping the funeral part.

Do I have to have a funeral? Presumably whether I die in my sleep or a car crash my body would end up in the mortuary. Could I leave instructions that I wanted to go staright from the mortuary to cremation without the funeral/service bit in between.
Nope you don't.My Mum left instructions "No funeral, no mourners, no flowers"
We obliged and we're comfortable with that even though we didn't know about her instructions until after she had died.
The only people that "kicked-up a fuss" were the distant relatives that hadn't seen or bothered about her for years and we knew she had disliked!
Quite enjoyed telling them there was no funeral, so go away. Wasn't going to help relieve them off their guilt

You can have an Athiest funeral/Darwinist funeral.
Remember they all believe that once you die thats it nothing your just going to rot in the ground. Im not religious but do find the thought of "afterlife" appealing vs once your dead thats it.
Having lost a mate knowing my true beliefs as an Athiest it really is a brutal reality.

There's a great song by muse - Thoughts of a Dieing Athiest.Remember they all believe that once you die thats it nothing your just going to rot in the ground. Im not religious but do find the thought of "afterlife" appealing vs once your dead thats it.

It's a very good question really.
My poor old mum died a while back, at 73, and she had no friends. She was divorced from my father and moved down south to Hastings.
When she died, there was only me and my dad at her funeral. None of her so called friends or family even bothered to attend.
The funeral was a complete waste of time and, in reality, there was nothing said at the funeral that couldn't be said to her ashes or when scattering them.
She wasn't religious and the Vicar knew nothing about her whatsoever when saying his few words.

Underground in a cardboard box I hope.
I think some sort of funeral is best, for the sake of those you leave behind, but I'd not have any of that religious "see you later" borrox.
Went to a humanist funeral some years ago and it's the only one I've been to that engaged and related to every person in the place, hardly a dry eye in the house but as that's part of the grieving process, I don't think that's a bad thing at all.
Religious ceremonies leave a lot of mourners pretty unmoved IMO. Not everyone has the same imaginary friend so that's understandable.

My mum died last year and according to her wishes, there was no funeral, but every one of her friends got a bottle of champagne delivered and was asked to drink a toast to her life... not her death.Way ta go mum.
