Adjusting Shocks

I have Gaz adjustable shocks, however, I'm not sure how to adjust them (soften or harden the ride) Using the - / + screw on the photo must have something to do with it...does turning it '-' soften things & turning it '+' harden the ride?????



Also - what does the 'spring' do & what effect does tightening/loosening the spring do.

As you can probably tell I'm starting on the 'learning my way around my car' project

yep + to make ride harder, - to make it softer

turning the spring cup upwards will increase the ride height - ie the clearance between the car and the road. Turning the cup downwards will lower the car.

Thanks for your help - now I just need to record the current settings so I know where I'm starting from.

I'm led to believe that I need to 'count the clicks' all the way down on the '-' from where it is currently set (to soften the ride right off) and this will give me my 'starting point' setting.

No always start from "fully hard" as this is when the valve is shut tight and then count down to reduce the hardness of the ride - that way you get them balanced. If you start from soft then one valve may not be quite as "open" as the other and you can end up with an imbalance in the shock settings from side to side. IIRC my Gaz are about 47-49 clicks from shut to open.
