Harmonics......... or resonance, some copper slip on the backing plates and wher ethe pads sit in the caliper helps quell the vibration

With 7mm left and your problem, bin em they aint worth dismantling just to get a few thousand miles out of(if your lucky) wink generally when pads are low they tend to graunch also(sometimes)like they are metal to metal eek

Squeal from the brakes are a high frequency vibration, usually the pads. 'copperslip' can stop the noise by lubricating the pad vibration if that is the problem, this s your first logical point of call, easy and inexpensive. If the pads' vibration is causing the noise it is because they are a poor fit and there is clearance enough to allow movement.

It could also be that the caliper is loose at one or more of the attachment bolts. Any allowed movement will allow vibration at high freqeuncy and thus the noise. You can't find it though, the only way is to listen under braking, good practice should eliminate it.
