Incompetent bank - sent a duplicate payment!
Discussion
My stupid incompetent bank have kindly decided to debit my account twice for an international transfer I made a few weeks ago.
The whole thing has been a complete farce from start to finish, I originally took the forms in to the branch with all the account details on which they filled in, they got me to check the details on the international transfer form, everything looked correct. Money debited my account fine, 3 weeks later it got returned to me as the person who filled the form in had put in the correct info but they were all in the wrong boxes!
I logged onto my internet banking and decided to make the payment myself (which in hindsight I should of done in the first place) this cost me an additional £60 because of the exchange rate, I entered the info correctly and waited… 2 days later, the money still had not left, phoned up the bank told them the situation and they told me I hadn’t clicked the confirm button and was advised to remake the payment.
Getting more than a little annoyed now I logged back in and made the payment again at a further loss of £8 due to the exchange rate. This payment debited my account within an hour and was received by the beneficiary within 4 hours. Excellent.
Kindly the day after the bank decided to debit and send the money that was apparently not submitted, this has taken my account quite overdrawn as after sending the transaction I pretty much had a nil balance. Before I managed to notice the f
k up a direct debit got returned and my wage got swallowed up by the overdrawn amount, which has left me with absolutely no wage this month.
Phoned my bank in a rage and told them to sort it out, apparently it can take 4 – 6 weeks for a complex transaction to be investigated and returned, I told them I have bills to pay and a 6 month old son who will need feeding, they have taken responsibility for the charges incurred and interest but are flat refusing to give me any kind of overdraft, temporary or otherwise to tide me over for the month.
I don’t have words strong enough for what I think of them right now! Luckily I have funds available elsewhere which should hopefully cover me for the month but what if I hadn’t?
So far its cost me £40 in phone calls to the bank, £68 in lost exchange rates, £56 in overdraft and returned payment fees and £27 in 3 lots of international transfer fees.
Am I reasonable in thinking that I should be reimbursed for all of the costs including the phone calls and lost exchange rates? I have logs of all the calls with a breakdown of costs for each and everything else is on my statement.
I’m just so annoyed and frustrated with them at the minute and needed to vent some anger, sorry for the long post but it’s needed to show the whole situation!
Also the company I have sent the money to have kindly offered to send me a cheque but at present I have told them to hold off until the bank try and recall the money as if they send me a cheque they will deduct their charges and I will lose out yet again on an unfavorable exchange rate.

Yes, but be prepared for a struggle. In my experience dealing with banks is like pedalling a two-ton bicycle up a generously-greased vertical slope. Be sure to note all the time you spend pedalling and add it to the bill at the same rate that you'd have been paid if you'd spent the time at work instead. I did this and got my money back in the end... it took talk of the Obmudsman to illicit some action though.I had a problem with HSBC last year which cost me a 45 miunte phone call from overseas. When I mentioned this to the chap, he said "what do you think that has cost you?"
I said "not sure, maybe £100".
"Fine, you'll get £100 put in to your account in the next day or so". And he did too. So yes, pursue it. Mind, that was my business account. A similar episode with my personal account with LTSB got a result but was more painful. Stick at it!
