Are they not still considered as self employed contractors and so are responsible for their own NI and tax? I know that they used to be. I guess the rate makes up for not getting sick pay or holiday pay.

The seem to be the kind of employer that justifies the continuing existance of trade unions.

Not unusual really. So if you do a 9 hour day, five days a week, and say every Saturday morning, that's £22K per annum. Still not the average wage is it.

Have you seen how hard they work in Aldi? Its like a blur. You have to pack your stuff away from the tills after you've paid because there is ZERO chance in hell of keeping up with the checkout girl. Working in Tescos must be a holiday in the Bahamas by comparison.

I haven't found the latest figure, but in 2006 it was £26K, allegedly.

Not bad for spakker supermarket shelf stacking though with no pressure. Other than saturday mornings i could handle that for a year or two between careers.

Yeah although you'd get more on benefits so fair play to the 'spakkers'.

Not if you are single with no kids and no health problems. Unless you cheat the system, but who would do such a terrible thing?

Regardless of what the official figures are for the average wage, I would say that £20-£25K wasn't bad, even if it's below the average. If there are two earners, the combined income should be quite comfortable.

They pay about €14 an hour here in Ireland. Not bad money for the type of work.
