Are they really necessary? I use the example of that new ITV drama this evening (something Execution) when the woman locked her Peugeot estate. They added a little beep that you know is a generic sound and not something that Peugeots do. This is the same with mobile phones beeping to show the audience the character has hung up. I mean, is it really necessary!? Oh and don't get me started on the added skidding noises on Police, Camera, Action!!

Nothing can be as bad as the dubbed in sound of a Ford starter with a worn ring gear on a Bentley in those Italian B movies.

how about the sound that night vision goggles (silence of the lambs)or indeed any electrical piece of equipment makes in American films.

And the rectangle with a red light in it and 'something-cam' written in it. Headcam, Lioncam, Toecam, bkcam etc...

Well in American films its because there is probably an Oscar for it biggrin

Watched a prog the other night that featured a Leyland Olympian bus drawing up at a bus stop - but the sound effect was unmistakenly the sound of a London Routemaster.

And why do all cars on TV have alarms that "chirp". In all the cars I've had, not one made this noise!

And why when they make love on telly it seems to go on for hours with the female uttering oohs and ahs all the time. For me, 5 miuntes and she wants to get back to reading her book...........

Going back a while now, but before the days of downloadable, and "real" ringtones, I remember several programmes (drama TV rather than film) where mobile phones would ring, and the noise dubbed in was most definately NOT the noise that the particular brand of mobile would make!

"Nokia tune" playing when an old Sony Ericsson phone was ringing for example.

"Chirping" car alarms are irritating too - as has already been mentioned.

Regarding cars starting - I remember watching a programme when a driver got into a V12 Jaguar - and started the engine. The "engine turn-over" sound was from a small hatchback (high pitched and very fast!) rather than a brute of an engine turning over!

When you're really sad you'll notice loads of effects are the same too - must be a way of saving money. This seems to happen a lot in the sci-fi films, door opening noises, bleeps, blasts etc

There's obviously a giant soundbank somewhere smile

I've personally never seen any text on my PC appear as if being typed and accompanied by a series of beeps. I feel ripped off.
