I just read the book. Some places that guy goes to to speak to the gangs make the worst jails in the USA/UK look like Holiday Inn. Brazil, El Salvador, South Africa, their jails must rate worse than going to hell, around the 15 mark on a 1-10 scale of hell on earth.

A jail in Rio, iron cages designed for 15 prisoners, with 150 poor bds crammed in, no sanitation, free for all rape on weak guys, poo hanging in plastic bags on the bars until the next crap collection goes round. El Salvador, the warders don't even go INTO the jail, just leave the prisoners to run it, and run it they bleddy well do.
