I have two elderly cats, and I suspect both of them might have furballs they need to eject. They are throwing up small amounts of material from time to time, but we haven't seen any furballs for some time.(I wish cat food manufacturers would stop putting colouring in their products, the cats don't care what the food looks like, and it stains the carpet!)

They live indoors but we provide them with fresh grass growing in a pot, and this used to do the trick, but they both have had teeth removed and although we offer them suitably sized pieces to chew on they don't seem interested.

The nearest vet involves a car journey of 20 minutes or so, so we avoid taking them unless it seems very necessary, due to their age.

Any advice would be welcome.

My neighbours have an old-ish cat that does this from time to time. The vet gives it a jab - steroids? - and that seems to fix it for a few months.

I used to work with a bloke that suffered from these, every morning after a night on the pull he'd be sat in the van sounding like a cat with a fur ball, coughing and choking trying to clear the pubes from the back of his throat.

Infact everyone knew him as "Furball"

a coat hanger works really well

the hook fishes them out of the cat's stomach which saves them coughing their guts up and making a mess on the carpet
