I created this on another forum and got a pretty good response, have a read and take the plunge!

Alright guys and dolls,

I was having a chat with the girlfriend the other evening and she gave me a right ol' ticking off for continuing to spend so many pennies on anything car orientated...

So I sat down and worked out the following - not sugar coating it or owt.

Driving career of 3 and a half years.

In that time I've purchased cars to the value of £24,500
I've purchased insurance to the value of £7,500

In 3 and a half years I've spent £32,000 on cars without taking fuel, servicing, etc into consideration. Thats like £9000 a year - if you ask me that is dangerously high? I could have a good deposit for a house saved there and be rolling in a Porsche Boxster or R32.

So then, lets see whose a playa and who scrimps and saves (I think the latter is the better option...pfft!)

1. Cosmic - Matt £9000 a year.

If you want a real scare, work out how much you spend directly and indirectly on HER.

The car will seem much better value, and more reliable as a ride.

No loan, no cost.
Servicing (3x) 300 quid.
Fuel, get paid 40p per mile business miles, probably slightly up here - lotta business miles
Replacement wheels and tyres 1350 quid
Insurance - 600 quid ish (unlimited miles, business cover)
1 x can wd40, 1 x can white grease, 1 x large bottle of car wash = about 10 quid
Dentist (replacing fillings) 100 quid
Ear surgeon (replacing hearing) 200 quid
Plastic Surgeon (removing fixed grin from face)..... TBA

Reality - this year has been dear on tyres and replacing flaking chrome wheels, but generally I spend about a grand a year for 30,000 miles including insurance. Contrary to popular "gas guzzler" belief, I get around mid-high 20's to the gallon on average (town and longer runs combined), so fuel would be quite a large factor without the business miles claim-back.

Value for money.

Not cars, but I've been riding bikes for less than a year and I added up the other day and think I've spent around £14500.

I don't think I've spent that in 25 years.

2 people owning 2 vehicles over that time has cost £8K in depreciation. possible that is 20 cars and motorbike.

Insurance has NEVER been more than £350 each per year.
