Xbox 360 internet connection.......

My son has just bought an Xbox 360 and wants to get online to play games etc, the Xbox has an ethernet connection but unfortunately it is too far away from broadband router to plug in.
We have a Wii in the same room and that is wirelessly connected as are PSP's etc and I understand that I can connect the Xbox wirelessly but need a specific wireless adaptor. Any advice on the best (cheapest) way to do this, I have a spare (USB) computer wireless adaptor but doesn't seem to want to work but I don't know how to set it up either.

Any help greatly appreciated.

The only wireless adapter you can use is the official Microsoft one unfortunately, and its about £50!

You might be able to work something with a cheap wireless router? (I hate networky stuff so cant say how, but im sure ive read about someone doing something, somewhere..!)

Can you not get a really long Ethernet cable? (I don't know, i'm not techy so its a guess!)

I'm using a netgear game adaptor, connects via ethernet. but you have to know a bit about networking ie changing ip addys and the like. It works well but maybe tricky to get working.
My advice would be... front the cash and get a microsoft adaptor. It seems the easier way

Well I could but it means going across the living room through the doorway and down through the hallway etc, don't think it would be a very good solution. I could take through walls into attic etc but I really can't be arsed if a simple wireless adaptor will do it.

Wouldn't that just cost you about the same as a wireless adapter!?

Also, I'm not sure if you would end up with a very laggy connection due to it being quite far away..

You could buy a cheap wireless router to use as a wi-fi bridge although some config is required.

Not sure you'll make much of a saving vs the MS one, though. Plus it's very neat and tidy sat behind the XB.

No, he doesn't need wireless. He needs to connect his XBox to the internet; wireless is one possible way to do it. PoE is, potentially, a better way to do it.

Cost wise, the official XBox wireless adapter is the way to go, no doubt about it particularly if you have a decent wireless signal already. Personally, for a few £s more I would go for a couple of PoE adapters and a switch in the games room - you generally get a better, more stable connection that isn't prone to dropping out when next door turn their microwave. YMMV, of course.

Found this as well, it might be of help to you...
What I would do is buy a powerline pack, from somewhere like PC World.

You get 2 powerline's in the box, you plug 1 into a plug socket in your wall (I wouldn’t use any extension leads or multi adaptors with this) and connect a supplied Ethernet cable from your router to the first powerline.

Then take your second power line to your Xbox and plug it into a plug socket next to your xbox 360, again no extentions or multi adaptors, and then plug the other supplied Ethernet cable from the power adaptor into the back of your xbox.

Then just turn them on at the wall, and it will be like your xbox is plugged directly into your router.

I would say this powerline pack is best for you.

This will be allot better then 1 long wire. As it is powered and is a much shorter route to your xbox from your router.

Failing that and you do want a very long cat 5 cable I will make you one up for pennies. I still have about 500 metres of cat5 cable from the last job I did, and all the connectors, I regularly use a very long lead for my bedroom I forget how long it is but it isn't far off 50M. I don't get any lag issues.
