A friend of mine is interested in doing a book-keeping/accounting course.

The programme that's been mentioned is "IAB level 2 certificate book-keeping" and she's been looking for something that she can do from home rather than a "day release" type of course.

Other than good old Google, is anyone in the know on who might be worth looking at for this sort of thing?

I think most of the companies she's phoned so far have given her the impression she's dealing with salesmen, which I guess she is, but basically people more interested in selling a course than finding out what she does/doesn't want etc.

No promises but try here http://www.aat.org.uk/
Not sales based organisation, my wife works for TSB and has been doing a course with them for a few years now and is currently going on now to her degree.

Thanks I'll pass that on - of course not being in accounts I don't know what is/isn't "good" I just said I'd try asking around vs. her just going off what Google throws back.

The thing that did surprise me is that even with a home course it still seems each module takes a year (with the course I mentioned).

I guess I naively thought it'd be "self study" i.e. if you feel capable of passing the exams you take them when you want to rather than stick to a timetable.

I dont know much about it either but I guess it has to be timed as tax laws etc change and you need to learn what is current.

There is no doubt that AAT will give anyone an excellent grounding in the theory of book-keeping and accounting as well as a good overview of other aspects such as taxation, Company Law and VAT.

The AAT is a well respected qulification and can be used as a stepping stone to a full blown professional accounting qualification if the individual is ambitious enough.
