NASA have just released this recent image from the Hubble Space Telescope.

It shows a smaller, closer galaxy overlaping a larger, further one.

It's the top of my hi-fi after I roller painted the ceiling (that's the clean version).

Nice find.

There's a cool space picture every day at Astronomy Picture Of The Day.

They are actually at different distances from us. The small one is passing in front of the larger one - they are not intermingling (although there are quite a few images of genuinely colliding galaxies).

I was watching one of those Nasa podcast things, and one interesting thing came out. When galaxies collide, you'd think that there would be chaos, and it all goes smooshy. Well, apparently, the distances between the starts is that great, that even when they collide, they seldom 'collide' if you know what I mean. Gravity plays hell within each other, but there are few actual collisions... Well I was aghast at that. Just shows exactly how large they are, I suppose.
