Hi all - I thought I would bore you with my engine rebuild pics.

The problem - A sump full of bits isnt a good sign! Every guide and tensioner broke.

The rebuild

Back in

More rebuilding

Cams in - top cam chains guides not in - fitted after the photo was taken.

Job done.

Ive now clocked up nearly 150 miles since the rebuild - Im getting confident with it now - its time to give 6 or see when the rev limiter cuts in.

Regards

Sean

That looks like a job well done Sean, just a quick thought though isn't your air filter just above the exhaust manifold ? would a cold air feed be a worth looking into ? again well done and good luck.
Cheers.....Tony.

Hi Tony,

Cold air feed needs to be done, I just need a good think on where to take the feed from and whats needed - winter time job, Im enjoying every dry day at the moment.

Nice job Sean.

I think with the summer we are having the cold air feed shouldn't be a major problem biggrin

Loving your work there. How much are those cossie engines, and where can I get one from? It looks the business.

To date about £5k in total including fitting, there have been a number of issues which have added to the cost but its looking good. The basic engine was £775 for a 45k engine that had a full service history and was pristine. I imagine costs would of been higher with a full engine re-build.

Hi James - your engine looks very nice.

Out of interest have you got a front torsion (ARB) fitted, if so whats the clearance like to the sump, mine didnt have one, and when I offered the ARB up it touched the sump, I had to get rally design engine mounts (they dont sag like original ones) to get 15mm clearance to the ARB, then the bonnet wouldnt shut,so I raised the body by 10mm on all chassis mounting points then I had to elongate the front hinge positions of the bonnet - and now it shuts.

The left hand engine bank touched the bulkhead of the body - so I had to grind out the top of the spark plug cavity rear wall to get 2mm clearance, also the exhaust downpipes would no longer fit as the engine was higher, so I made them adjustable.

Just wondering if all Cosworth conversions have the same issue or is just mine that is a pain in the rear!

Don't know if it helps but the ARB on the V8S is 22mm diameter, S1 is 24mm, S2 is 26mm.

Hi Chris (Barky) - I got mine 2nd hand from TVR carparts they had a pile of them.

I looked at your rebuild pics - nice job, nice work on the steering rack and attention to detail is very good all round, when is your predicted return to the road? Had any walnut incidents recently?

No walnut incidents no - although taking an angle grinder to the chassis to make the steering rack fit has to come close ! smokin

The suggestion with the ARB was to go for the thinner one (V8S) if it is tight under the sump, maybe also shim up the engine mounts or fit new ones if they are saggy.

I think your must of been far worse than mine lol, I did not fit the engine myself but as far as I was told there were no issues getting it in, The original engine mounts did not take the weight of the engine and the offside one gave which gave me all the problems initially, these were swapped for high quality ones and no issues. The clutch was a straight swap for a cossie clutch, the engine cleared both top and bottom (this was what I was concerned about), the water expansion reservoir had to be raised slightly. Apart from that I cannot think of any major fitting issues.
Mike from Boosted will probably read this and correct me lol.

James you said the water expansion reservoir had to be raised slightly. Why? Ive not raised mine - do I need to?

I can probably comment where James has left off. The engine itself is more or less a 'drop in' conversion so long as you tilt it back on the hoist. Removing the pulley would make life easier. Engine mounts are a pain, stock ones seem to go soggy mainly on one side according to PH postings. Now that I'm all finished I'm a tad concerned about TrickJohns bonnet clearance comments. This engine has had the tougher Rally design mounts fitted and is sitting higher up. I did remove a tiny bit from the rear of the n/s cam cover so as to miss the bulkhead. The bonnet goes on tomorrow so I'll know if it fouls, that said the mounts could be loosened and may slide down into the chassis a bit further thus lowering the engine. It does have roll bar clearance with these new bushes. The older bushes allowed the engine to sit very close to the roll bar.

Ok spoken to Mike today and early indications are good, bonnet has gone on and appears to have enough clearance on both ARB and bonnet so no adjustments needed hopefully.
As for the water expansion bottle, the base was touching the engine and started to melt at contact point so had to be raised a few Centimeters.

Fingers crossed it will be finished next week

Gents I really like the look of those cossies- good jobs. I want one. How do they compare against the 8 pot boys? I take it the engines are from the siera?
