Amateur Investment Hour

Once again, it seems the experts have all appeared out of the woodwork, shorting this, buying that, asking opinions about what the best software/trading platform is. Colleagues at work all rushing to open trading accounts etc.
Why is it that everyone suddenly tries to become a player when the markets hit such tumultuous times?

Lots of people are taking the view that now isn't the worst time to buy shares. It's better to be thinking about buying now, than when the dot com boom was happening right ?
Well it doesn't really matter, if you're going to buy shares here, you have to be disciplined enough to buy in small amounts and be very patient.
So regardless of whether now is or isn't a good time to buy, most people are likely to lose money eventually from a lack of discipline and patience.
I just find it amusing every time a crisis happens, I remember loads of people on various forums boasting about buying Northern Rock at a low price. It then dropped like a lead weight the next day IIRC.
I just think that it's probably not the best time for people who don't know what they are really doing to be getting involved, still, I suppose it is their own money to do what they want with.

The normal strategy of "hold for the long term" comes under pressure in a falling market. Psychologically, no-one wants to be sitting on the deck of the Titanic watching the iceberg approach - better to be rearranging deckchairs.
I remember the rash of amateur day trading around the dot com boom, and that didn't end well.
Seems like high-stakes musical chairs to me. Best done virtually, not with your hard-earned.

You could have made about 30% on HBOS today. I guess thats why. The trouble is, like you say, most of them just allow the traders to make some cash.I just think that it's probably not the best time for people who don't know what they are really doing to be getting involved, still, I suppose it is their own money to do what they want with.

Because once the market drops, it tends to go back up a bit. SO chances are you can randomly select something, it may go up, you'll make a little cash. Why is it that everyone suddenly tries to become a player when the markets hit such tumultuous times?
