Unfortunately you always have to threaten to leave, then they put you onto the retentions department, who can improve whatever their current offerings are.
Or they can say

Well I’m nearing the end of my 3G contract so was hoping for a few tips on how to get a better deal out of them, last year I got 500 anytime mins, and 100 text for £10 a month with no new phone. But this was after I rang them and threatened to end my contract.
Try that trick again and they will most likely tell you goodbye. And charge over £100 for a port code for your number.3 have a rep for letting you away with that once, and once only.

Very simple.Don't ask them for a discount.
They have entire teams trained to deal with people who call up wanting a better deal. They even have systems which calculate how much they can cut your account.
The best way is to simply phone up and ask for the MAC number (might be PAC), this is the code you need to give to a new provider if you want to transfer your existing number.
Don't discuss anything, least of all your deal. Ask them to send you the number and get off the phone.
Before it arrives in the post you will recieve a call from someone who's sole job is to make you stay. At that point you act reluctant and say that you really want an iPhone (unless you are already at O2).
The iPhone ploy really get's them going as they have an entire schpeel and course of action again to combat heamorage to O2.
They'll tell you all the iPhone faults and come up with a couple of better phones that they offer. Make a point of showing mild interest but not too much.
Let them make you an offer and then tell them that you'll think about it and hang up.
Then you wait. Before the offer expires they will call back again and may even better it if you agree there and then.
It's like playing poker with a rich blind kid who you've sat with his back to a large mirror.

Unless he is an utter mug who has a £10 a month contact but is reguarly paying bills for £200/£300, he has no chance of getting any of that.
I have a relative who works in the 3 call centre in Glasgow, and I hear from them that every single punter out there threatens to cancel their phone and wants an I-Phone/New Blackberry/New Nokia. Old news.
I want (on £10 a month) is usually doesn't get.

That wouldn't be anything to do with her needing to pay out the rest of her contract would it? If you are out of contract it won't cost you anywhere near £100 on any network to get your PAC, It is free to get your PAC from Vodafone.
On the other hand custard isn't free, I suggest saving the money to give to your mother.
Nope, she is out of contract by nearly a year.
They claim not to do the code now for free. I've talked to every call centre monkey in the place. No change. She pays, or tough t!tty.
I could hardly believe it either. But it is what it is. Wish it was different.
Needless to say, she now has a new number.

Very strange then, the terms and conditions on the Vodafone website explicitly state that the PAC is free. They claim not to do the code now for free. I've talked to every call centre monkey in the place. No change. She pays, or tough t!tty.

My lovely wife has been with o2 for years and has recently approached the end of another contract term with them. Her current contract is £20 per month.
She rang up asking for the pac code and was put through to retentions. 10 minutes later they have succeesed in retaining her for another 18 months by giving her a free n95 on a £45pm contract - for £20pm.
Her account with o2 is over £100 in credit from the last contract negotiations when as well as pre-loading the account with the discount at the start of the contract - they discounted each bill, too! Ta for that o2.

Im with 3. and orange though the orange phone is dormant.
Last upgrade i called 3 and told them what phone i wanted and they told me i could only have it with an 18mnth contract. I told them I had a contract with orange who werent as good as 3 but were willing to do me a better deal and that i was willing to move and suggested they check my bill which is usually around the 1-180 a month mark and they gave me everything i wanted. Cant wait for nov when i next upgrade.

Depends how much you spend. My (personal) bill is about £200 a month and I always get offered something to stay.
Bloody hell thats a lot for a personal bill. Considering you could probably get an unlimited minutes and unlimited texts for lot less than that i assume you must use a lot of internet or multimedia? WN3 said:

Another vote for O2, very good service, coverage and pricing. She rang up asking for the pac code and was put through to retentions. 10 minutes later they have succeesed in retaining her for another 18 months by giving her a free n95 on a £45pm contract - for £20pm.
