I think the house raffling idea is great and wish them luck.

How difficult/illegal would it be to raffle a car or anything else for that matter?

Those airport "best of the best" car competitions are just raffles.

nope, they are spot the ball competitions. Element of 'skill' MUST be involved.

Raffling your house has been around a while. Seem to remember a winthishouse.com or something a few years back.

Refereees get paid about £50k a year to do it and still get it wrong sometimes, so there must be some skill involved, albeit it very little wink

Very few people can call sell their cars privately these days (or anything else of value for that matter).

I'm talking about Joe Public being able/allowed to set up his own website (with a skill question or whatever you want to call it) and raffling his car.

We could do a test here on PH smile

You could ask people to enter by text. Perhaps, the Prize could be a Lotus......

Sailing close to the wind there!

I'd be interested in how you set these competitions up legally, it'd be a nice profitable way of shifting a car if done correctly.

Yes, I wasn't actually thinking of making a profit, just being able to sell something for a fair price.

estimating where the ball is, notice I put 'skill' not skill, wink

Apparently they are quite heavily regulated and an independent adjudicator presides over all the draws.

There's no skill in spot the ball at all. A panel of adjudicators are supplied with a photo of a game with the ball erased. They then decide where they wish the notional ball to be. That's why it's always pissy old grannies who know nothing about the beautiful game who win.

Don't they use primarily Oldham games for this? Which makes it harder because the players are rarely looking at the ball anyway but shielding their eyes from the wind and drizzle?

Does he mean win this Lambo for £25 raffles at the airport? ie there are only 100,000 tickets sold and someone could win the car for a £25 ticket.

You can only give a prize away by raffle (like the house) if you own it outright. I guess that's why more people don't do it.

Yes, but apparently they are spot the ball competitions (www.bestofthebest.co.uk). I thought they were raffles originally but could well be wrong.

It's always had the spot the ball element IIRC. They have to use spot the ball to get around gambling laws I think, it would be classed as a lottery otherwise and therefore subject to the laws.

Whether it's a 'game of skill' or not is irrelevant really, it's simply a way of determining the winner in a non-random way.
