assuming the tt survives his party conference, what the latest he can hang onto power before having to call an election?

Doesn't there have to be a majority of 70 MPs wanting him out, before they can ask for a leadership challenge?

I think the OP is asking when is the latest that Brown can call the election.

I think the current 5 year term ends in May 2010

May 2010 IIRC.

My guess is that they will hang on to the very last day they can. My second guess is that they will spend the next two years forcing through unpleasant legislation that will be difficult to get rid of for the new administration.

It's that or the Labour party will destroy itself from the inside and support a vote of no-confidence in the government. I don't know if that forces an election - but it's likely. Since Cameron is going to get a landslide and it's only a matter of when....it's suicidal for 'em to do that - but they may be pissed off and idiotic enough to do it.

No. 70 MPs can call a contest.

Anyway, the OP's Q was about a general election and the bottler's party has until June 2010.

And what are the odds that they'll engineer a "National Emergency" and postpone the election?

Surely a PM should be responsible enough to know when its time to quit, GB seems to have no shame, if labour want to carry on for the full term then elect a new leader, somone who actually knows his arse from his elbow, instead of clinging on and making things worse and worse as the days go by.

Gordon Brown, Know your limits.

and he'll try and grip on until then.....dragging this country down just far enough for Cameron to be left with a total cluster-fk.

There is no way for them to do that other than by a coup d'etat.

The general feeling is that if Brown is toppled, there will have to be a general election, as (even though this was the case with Brown) any new leader would have no real mandate from the people.

I would imagine this is why Brown hasn't been removed from within, yet. There are plenty of old Left wing Labour MPs who'd be more than happy going back to grumbling and doing nothing from the opposition benches, though.

The Labour Party should WANT Brown to stay on. Let him carry the can. Then Miliband can take over as leader "clean". They surely have to be thinking "OK we'll lose - but maybe we can make a comeback with the new guy next time around". There again they may have assessed the situation and come to the same conclusion I have - that they are out for a generation. In which case Miliband might want his day in power.

Politics could be about to change radically in the UK. With the SNP in power in Scotland, the Tories in England and Wales the Union could actually get dissolved. If that happens it's going to mean the end of the parliamentary Labour party. They'll have to start again...

Very interesting to see how it turns out.

I wonder who the Labour Party will foist on their safest seats? My guess is the old grumblers could find themselves deselected in favour of the party's core talent.

Millipede isn't media friendly enough for the right wingers in Labour and isn't Union friendly enough for the left w(h)ingers.

Hence his little newspaper article ending up a damp squib and his coming out in support of Brown this weekend.

Once Labour are out of power they might as well hire Neil Kinnock, as they haven't anyone untainted of any substance left.

I don't think he'll last till May 2010.

As soon as he starts to really crumble, they'll all turn on him like hyenas.

Milliband is just playing the long game....he's a judas waiting to happen.

If Brown is ousted, who ever takes over will be pressured by all to call an election.

There was little national mandate for Brown to be PM, let alone his replacement !!

I actually want Brown to stay... If Labour get a new leader who's good at spin and the economy starts to pick up again (which will probably happen whoever is in charge) there's a chance people with short memories might vote for them again.

The longer Clown stays in charge the less likely it is that we'll be saddled with the useless shower of ste in government for another term.

I have my fingers and other available appendages crossed for a shoeing at the ballot box that will eclipse the 1931 kicking.
