Saw a job ad in the paper yesterday which looked pretty interesting and i wondered what it might be.

They are recruiting Personnel Vetting Officers, decent money and it says "Requires willingness to travel extensively throughout the UK"...

Wonder what it could be???

Are you serious?

The job means assessing staff to see if they're likely to be a spy or to become a spy at some point in the future. A spy for the other side, that is.

Exciting is one thing it isn't.

Why not apply? At least you'll find out more about it and answer your own question!

Yes, but remember they want your soul. You'll have to surrender your life for them and when you find out sensational secrets, you won't be able to reveal them because of the official secrets act.

Yeah the vetting people I have met generally just are given a name and look into backgrounds and do various interviews with people to find out if they are allowed to handle intelligence information.

Dull it most certainly is.

So like posing as a foreign oprative (or general person who shouldn't have that information) trying to get them to sell you information or extract it by threatening them or thier families? Would seem to be the acid test IMO. Could be interesting biggrin.

You investigate people's backgrounds by going around talking to everyone they came in contact with...university professors, neighbors, milkman, etc. You do this to find out if there is anything that can compromise them eg. , and to make sure that there are no skeletons in their closets that reveal something about their personality which would make them unfit for working in intelligence...record of theft, etc.

Like it says, really. You vet the personnel.

Dead boring, and the travel means you get to live out of a suitcase, wondering what's going on back home and missing your other half/pets/bike/TV/slippers/bed, etc.

Oh and you won't really be able to talk about what happened at work either on the odd occasions you do get home....which does get frustrating at times when you need to rant about it but have to swallow it and just get on.

Just my experience.

Classic at the bottom of the advert in the Sunday Times for MI5/MI6

"please do not dicsuss you application with anyone"!

If you are checking people out you will also be checking to see if their CV, account of themselves is completey accurate.

I had a colleague who underwent PV before she went off to a job she is very cagey about. She was a bottom end administrator but they stil did enquiries you would not believe (and which of course I will not disclose on this site in case I want to be one 'of them').

The whole experience was long winded and like water torture and I think that had she realised how tough it was going to be (both in terms of invasion of her prvacy and the time they gave her in cross-examination) she would not have bothered. All I would say is don't apply as a single person over 30, and if you do expect some searching questions!
