Got the eggs box back from MS yesterday with a new disk drive and motherboard fitted. I was amazed at how quiet it was, it humms away nicely now and doesnt intrude on film watching etc

Are they fitting much better components or was I exposed to a particularly noisy one for the last 2 years before it blew up?!

The Old Xboxs were much noisier than the current model. New Xboxs have much better cooling and a different disc drive compared to the old.

The repaired DVD drive makes a lot more noise than the original I had, but I got my XBox second hand, so it might not have been original either...

My launch xbox is like a tornado jet taking off.

My 2nd xbox (60GB) is much much quieter, and the disc spins up twice as fast.

Although the new one has cheaper components, the power lead for instance, the old one has a metal end, and 2 buttons you need to press to remove it, the new one is all plastic with no release buttons. It just feels flimsy too, I have no doubt the new one will be alot more reliable, but they are cutting corners in some places.
