Ariel problems.........

Any thoughts welcome !

Took out very old loose ariel silver steel looking type (that worked) and replaced it with a short stubby black one.
That now does not work !

Simply undid the old connection `wire to wire` with pvc over the top of it and `tied in` new ariel wire and retaped up.

Any ariel guru`s out there ?

did you earth the aerial base? remember that they normally earth through the toothed cup and the car's body - doesn't work so well on fibre glass cars...

in a word `no`.

I also took out an old electric ariel lumped but disconnected in the boot.
(Disconnected apart from what looked like an earthing wire !!)

Will have another dig tonight.

You might also want to look at the type of antenna. Typically they are 'earthed' to the car body to give it a ground plane to work against. As pointed out, if you have a fibreglass body this doesn't work. Running a ground wire to the chassis for the return will give you a signal but may not give best results if the antenna is designed to have the ground plane. The other option is to get a balanced antenna (dipole) that doesn't need the ground plane.

On the upside you can put the antenna inside your boot and it will work fine as the signal will get through the body fine. Also work for GPS antennas for the sat nav or tracker !
