help with child trust fund
Discussion
Hi guys and gals,
As the heading suggests I need some help with a child trust fund.
Unfortunately I can only invest the standard £250 from the govt at present, however I'm hoping to be able to invest small amounts through out the coming years (not large amounts unfortunately).
What would the PH community suggest as an investment vehicle for the wee man?
any help advise greatly appreciated.
Cheers....

Index tracker. I went for Foreign and Colonial's but all the CTF providers have almost identical products and charges, not much to choose between them.
You have no choice other than to invest your govt £250 voucher in a CTF, but personally I'll be using another investment vehicle other than a CTF to put any of my own money that I can afford to squirrel away for my kids, my reasoning being:
- CTF management charges are very high, around 1.5% of fund value per year for a tracker fund, I'm paying less than 0.5% on the tracker funds I choose for my ISA.
- With a CTF, the money goes to the child on their 18th birthday and it's theirs to do with as they wish, however irresponsible they may be at that age.
- With a CTF, you can't get at the money if you need access to it in a dire emergency
If your not already using your personal ISA allowance, that's a much better way to save your own money for your kids IMO.
