Ok, I don't get it.

Power companies are making millions AND putting prices up. So the government wants to impose a windfall tax. How will more money going into the govt coffers help the consumers? Shirley the legislation should be to bring the prices down?

What about the other idea the TUC have been asking for in exchange to bail out Labours finances..... a new higher rate of tax above £100k. To make absolutely sure there is a capital/talent stampede out the UK.....yes great idea Comrades. rolleyes

It's not meant to help the consumer, is it?

Well that's what they keep trumpeting.

IMO altho I'm a small-c conservative I think certain things should be kept public, transport (bus/rail) and utilities for instance. They could still be run efficiently, and I think PPP is utter bks.

Why do we still have UK-based energy companies?

Surely they'd be better off domiciled or whatever somewhere where they don't get VBRJd every time they make a profit?

It's their usual Communist tactic of getting the 'Plebs' riled up - worked with 'Taxing gas'guzzling' 4x4's off the road, with the great unwashed never stopping to think that their little 1.8 would be in the same bracket - too blinded by hate and envy of others. same with the windfall tax - nothing to do with helping the most needy, and everything to do with ensuring the government has enough to continue paying benefits to their voters - who are way too thick to realise they won't benefit one jot from a windfall tax from a totally above board private company. However, it reads like 'us against them', which is what the Communist UK government is all about, and they'll get away with it.

It's akin to 'mob rule', not much different from Nero persecuting the Christians, blaming them for his own shortcomings, and of course, the majority go along with it because they think the persecuted are better off than them, and determined to bring them all down to their gutter level.

Perhaps the Tories ought to have an anti Classism bill.....

Immediate transfer of all utilities to government ownership.

hey ho, we own the water again, the gas, the electricity and possibly even the waste collection.

UK shareholders get their stake back. Companies are run by same CEO's as today, but on a bonus for minimising cost, and profit.

Buy cheap, supply cheap. Consumer happy.

surely the best policy would have been to keep the utility companies in National ownership.

These public companies run the services and make a profit so why could the Gov't not run the exact same service and either use the profits to off set the tax liability of all of us of run it at a break even point?

And also a way of deflecting blame for rising domestic fuel bills onto rapacious utility companies rather than the governments lack of a proper energy policy these last 10 years plus the renewables obligation.

They did a better job of running the railways from what I remember. Worst thing people had to be worried about was a dodgy sarnie. After privatisation it was "I wonder if anyone's laid eyes on, let alone maintained these rails in the last 10 years"

Hence why the track stuff was efectively re-nationalised in all but name, at huge extra cost due to 20 years of neglect.

To me it seems that the Gov is asking utility companies to pay them some money, so they can then afford to knock up a £10 off campaign telling people they need to lag their lofts. And those with period properties, those sash windows need to be replaced with double glazing.

If I was boss of Eon or similar I'd tell them to go fk themselves and go back to counting my money, which is what I think's happened

British rail was just as bad, if nor worse as far as investment is concerned, before privatisation. In fact it was the previous lack of investment that made privatisation the great white hope.
Unfortunately the Tories felt that they had to break it up to make it difficult for the socialists to re-nationalise.

The Government is too stupid to control the utilities. Second rate history graduates versus cunning experienced businessmen = no chance. Hence they can only act retrospectively and impotently.

If I was running Megabux Power and got done for an unexpected £billion tax bill, I'd simply increase my prices to recoup my margin. And so the taxpayer still loses. Always loses, and always will.

So we have to fund private companies profits due to authorities mismanagement?furious

All we need to do is to introduce accountability into Local authorities as there would be in the private sector.

You fk up, your fired.
