I'm looking for something like rFactor or GTR2 but a free version. Something that lets me release my creative side by painting cars and I know that rFactor allows this but i don't want to pay the fees to register (i'm a tight git)

Any ideas

well i suddenly have a whole load of time on my hands - there is an open source race sim called Racer I believe, or at least there was a few years ago, that is free.

I don't know very mich about it at all so can't help other than to tell you it exists.

You can do this with Live for Speed as well, the freebie version give you a selection of cars and a few variations of one of the tracks.
