I'm looking at buying a 40"/42" TV as a wedding/housewarming present for someone. I want to get them something decent, but at the same time I don't want to spend too much money (it is a gift after all) so have set a maximum budget or £700 or so.

I've found a Panasonic TH-42PZ80B plasma TV for £700. Is this a good buy, or would something else at the same price-point be better?

Cheers,

EYW

sticking to your pricing budget, i would go for something like:

Samsung Option 1 - £700
(i have 2 of these)

and if sticking to your size guide lines then one of these:
Samsung Option 2 - £514

I have 3 samsungs in total, and they are all the best of the bunch imho

Did I mention that I'd just got married and bought a new house?

I think there might be slightly better at a slightly cheaper price within the range though smile

I have just bought a TH-42PZ80B myself and am absolutely delighted with it, a friend was also so impressed they have just ordered on too.

Main use is for freeview, movies and games.

I would personally avoid Samsung as their stuff always seems to be needlessly complicated.

needlessly complicated?!?!?!? I dont know what samsung TVs you have had, but the ones I have (e.g. the first linking in my post) are not complicated at all to setup and use. a few of my mates also think the 32" ones are the best thing since sliced bread (well, im sure they actually dont!! lol)

anyway - im sure they will enjoy whatever you get!

:-)

WTF!

Ignore this man! You have the right telly OP, just find it at the right price (I'm not up to date on latest pricing)

You won't go far wrong with a 42" Panny... I now have two.

yes, I know it's showing off, but having two 42" plasmas is a bit like bedding both the Cheeky Girls at the same time IMO biggrin

Sounds like this might be the best deal then. I've looked online and I can't find it any cheaper, so it seems like I'm onto a winner!

Cheers all.

Sorry to hi-jack the thread, but I've been looking at tv's too lately and I dont want to create yet another tv thread so I'll use this. I'm after a 32 inch LCD for playing my xbox 360 on. I've seen this http://www.dabs.com/ProductView.aspx?Quicklinx=4ZR... , but it's well over £100 more than the samsung/ sony's in the same category. Is it worth the extra cost? Anyone got one? Or an alternative?
